Microcement is worth it for an HDB bathroom if you want a seamless, grout-free look, you would rather not hack, and your existing tiles and waterproofing are sound. It is less suited if you have an active leak, many hollow tiles, or you want the lowest-maintenance option and do not mind grout lines. A site survey tells you which camp your bathroom falls into.
Why HDB owners choose it
- No hacking. Sound tiles stay in place, so there is no debris, much less noise and less disruption to neighbours.
- Floor height barely changes. A thin overlay keeps door clearances and the step into the bathroom almost as they are.
- No grout lines. In a humid Singapore bathroom, grout is where mould usually starts. A continuous surface removes it.
- One surface everywhere. Walls, floor, kerb, niche and vanity can all share the same finish.
- Faster turnaround. With the system we use, a bathroom usually takes 3 to 4 working days.
- Early-years option. For new flats, HDB restricts hacking original bathroom finishes in the first years. An overlay is generally the route people take then. Check your own conditions with HDB.

The honest downsides
- It needs care. Use pH-neutral cleaners, not bleach. The top coat may need refreshing on a busy floor after a few years.
- It is not the waterproofing. The membrane underneath does that job. If it has failed, the leak must be fixed first.
- It can be slippery when wet unless an anti-slip additive is used in the floor top coat.
- It shows the hand. Microcement has tonal movement and trowel marks. If you want a perfectly uniform look, see samples first.
- It depends on the base. Hollow or moving tiles can lead to cracks.
When it is the right choice
- Your tiles are dated or the grout is stained, but they are firmly bonded
- There are no leaks or signs of water below
- You want a calm, continuous look
- You want to avoid the noise and mess of hacking
When to consider something else
- Active leak or failed membrane: repair the waterproofing first. A full redo may make sense.
- Many hollow tiles: they need fixing either way.
- You only dislike the grout: regrouting or a deep clean may be enough. See options for old tiles and mouldy grout.
Comparing value, not just price
Look at the whole job. A full re-tile means hacking, debris removal, new screed and membrane, tiles and grout, and more days. A microcement overlay over sound tiles skips most of that, but it is a hand-applied, multi-layer finish. Compare complete scopes for your bathroom rather than one rate. How Jiu Ding Sheng does HDB bathrooms
Bathrooms are the most common reason people call us. We survey first and only lay over a sound surface. We use the Natural Surface M Series at 1 to 1.5mm in four layers with no primer, with two protective top coats. The water resistance comes from that sealed system over a sound membrane, and we only do shower floors where a proper membrane is underneath. A bathroom usually takes 3 to 4 working days. See finished bathrooms on our Projects page and the finishes on the Finishes page.

Quick answers
Is microcement good for an HDB bathroom?
Yes, when the existing tiles and waterproofing are sound. It gives a grout-free surface without hacking and usually keeps floor height almost unchanged.
Can I do microcement in my BTO bathroom straight after key collection?
HDB restricts hacking and replacing the original bathroom finishes in the early years. An overlay that does not disturb the original finish or waterproofing is generally the route taken. Check your flat’s conditions with HDB.
Does a microcement bathroom get mouldy?
It has no grout lines, which is where mould usually starts. Good ventilation and regular cleaning with a pH-neutral cleaner still matter.
How long does a microcement HDB bathroom take?
With the system we use, usually 3 to 4 working days, depending on the condition of the tiles and the amount of detailing.
